Netlify AI Gateway is a proxy layer that routes requests to AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google through Netlify's infrastructure. You use standard provider SDKs but point them at Netlify's gateway URL instead of the provider's API directly. Netlify handles authentication and rate limiting, so no provider API keys are needed.
Instead of managing separate API keys for each AI provider and wiring up authentication yourself, the gateway centralizes access so you can call multiple providers with zero credential setup.
When to use it
- Calling GPT-4o or Claude from a Netlify Function without storing API keys in environment variables
- Switching between OpenAI and Anthropic models by changing a single model string
- Adding AI chat endpoints to a Netlify site using the existing OpenAI SDK
- Testing AI features locally with netlify dev using the same gateway that runs in production
- Monitoring AI model usage and costs through Netlify's dashboard instead of each provider's console
