Low-level Python exporter that sends OpenTelemetry traces, metrics, and logs to Azure Application Insights. Works with custom OpenTelemetry pipelines where the higher-level distro package offers too little control. Supports AAD authentication, offline retry storage, and sovereign cloud endpoints.
Unlike the auto-instrumentation distro, this exporter plugs directly into an existing OpenTelemetry SDK setup without replacing your pipeline configuration.
When to use it
- Routing OpenTelemetry spans from a custom tracer pipeline into Application Insights
- Sampling 10% of production traces with ApplicationInsightsSampler across distributed services
- Sending Python logging output to Application Insights using the log exporter and LoggingHandler
- Connecting to Azure Government endpoints with sovereign cloud credentials
- Retrying failed telemetry exports using local offline storage when the ingestion endpoint is unreachable
