What This Skill Does

expo-dev-client lets you build custom Expo development clients that include native code not supported by standard Expo Go. You can build them locally or in the cloud via EAS Build, then install on physical devices or simulators for testing.

Instead of manually configuring Xcode or Android Studio signing, provisioning, and build pipelines, EAS Build handles cloud compilation and TestFlight submission in a single command.

When to use it

  • Building a dev client after adding a third-party native SDK that isn't bundled in Expo Go
  • Distributing a custom development build to QA testers via TestFlight
  • Testing iOS widget or app clip extensions on a physical device
  • Running a local build on an Android device with adb install during native module development
  • Switching between multiple Metro bundler URLs on device using the dev client launcher UI
