What This Skill Does
Runs heavy computations in background Dart isolates so the Flutter UI stays responsive. Covers the decision between async/await for I/O tasks and Isolate.run or Isolate.spawn for CPU-bound work, with patterns for both short-lived and long-lived worker isolates.
Gives you a clear decision framework and ready-to-use isolate patterns instead of guessing when async/await stops being enough and actual threading is needed.
When to use it
- Parsing a multi-megabyte JSON response without freezing the app
- Decoding or encoding images in a background isolate
- Running expensive search or filter logic on large local datasets
- Setting up a persistent worker isolate for continuous data processing
- Choosing between async/await and isolates for a specific task
